June 20th is World Refugee Day.  Since 2001, the United Nations has designated this day as an opportunity to acknowledge the nearly 27 million refugees across the world and the situations they face daily. The first occasion of World Refugee Day marked the 50th anniversary of the UN’s 1951 Refugee Convention, which led to a 1967 protocol establishing a wide range of principles, standards and protections adopted by the international community.

As of June 2023, more than half of refugees worldwide fled from three countries: The Syrian Arab Republic, Ukraine, and Afghanistan. While a majority of refugees seek asylum in neighboring countries, Richmond hosts a number of families from Ukraine and Afghanistan.
