Computer use in the library

Reynolds Library provides computers and computer information resources at each campus to support teaching and learning. In addition, WiFi access is available college-wide for users with laptops or other portable devices. The computers are equipped with library research databases, MS Office, and other specialty software to allow students to complete their academic assignments.

Logging into library computers:

  • Reynolds faculty, staff and students will be prompted to login with their My Reynolds username and password.
  • Community users should ask library staff to log them into a library computer.

Users of library computer resources are expected to abide by the following policies:

  1. As per Reynolds policy 4-32 and VCCS Information Technology Student/Patron Acceptable User Agreement users are not allowed to:
    • Access, download, print, or store any information infrastructure files or services having sexually explicit content, or cultural, ethical and racial discrimination and violent materials unless authorized for class research.
    • Modify and remove equipment or software.
    • Use disruptive or destructive programs (viruses, etc.)
    • Disseminate unlawful, fraudulent, obscene, harassing, or threatening messages.
    • Use college computing resources to support any commercial venture or for personal financial gain.
  2. Children 14 and under are not permitted to use the computers without parental supervision. As per Reynolds policy 4-31 unattended children will become custody of the Reynolds Police.
  3. As per Reynolds policy 4-3 eating and drinking are not permitted at computer stations.
  4. Users will respect the privacy of others, including keeping noise to an acceptable level so as not to disturb other users of the library.
  5. Users are responsible for cleaning up their computer station upon leaving and closing out all applications.
  6. Users will report to the library staff any malfunction that occurs at their station.
  7. Computer stations may be monitored by library staff at any time.
  8. Library staff provide assistance and guidance with information, research and technology. However, students are expected to complete their own assignments.

Users who are found to be in violation of these policies are subject to disciplinary actions and may be restricted from or denied access to computer resources.

Donating to the library

Reynolds Library welcomes gifts of materials that are consistent with the Collection Development Policy, and with the stipulation that gifts become property of the Library. As such, materials may be added to the collection or disposed of at the discretion of the library staff. Materials received as gifts will be evaluated by the same criteria as materials purchased. The Library will determine the classification, housing, and circulation policy for all gifts.

Please contact the library before bringing materials in to donate. If you’d like a written acknowledgment that states the number of items donated, please complete the Donor Letter Form. Appraisal of the gift for tax purposes is the responsibility of the donor.

Group study rooms

Reynolds Library provides group study rooms to current students, faculty, and staff for collaborative learning projects, small meetings, advising, tutoring sessions, or other academic activities. All study rooms are equipped with wireless Internet access and white boards.

The Downtown Campus has three group study rooms, the Goochland Campus has one group study room, and Parham Road Campus has eight group study rooms. Each room can accommodate four to six people.

The following regulations are designed to provide fair access to the study rooms and to ensure responsible use:

  • Group study rooms are available for currently enrolled Reynolds students, faculty, and staff in good standing with the library.
  • Group study rooms can be used for academic and college-related activities only.
  • A student, faculty or staff ID needs to be presented at the time of check out.
  • Due to high demand, group study rooms are available only on a first come, first served basis.
  • Groups of two or more students have priority over individual users. Individual users will need to vacate the rooms for groups when no other group study rooms are available, unless the individual users have overriding justifications for special accommodations. Please notify the library staff if you have special accommodation needs and provide a copy of your Office of Student Accommodations Request for Services form to the library staff.
  • Use by a single group is limited to two hours per day. Renewals may be available if there are no other requests for use.
  • Users engaged in inappropriate or disruptive behavior will be asked to vacate the room. Users will be liable for any damage done to the room or equipment. Equipment that is not working should be reported to the library staff.
  • Rooms must be kept in clean condition.
  • Users must keep the room lights on, the windows uncovered, the door unblocked at all times.
  • All study rooms should be vacated no later than 15 minutes before the library closes.
  • If study room is left vacant, it may be reassigned.

Library employees are authorized to remove users from a group study room for any violation of these policies and may contact campus police if necessary to handle disruptive patrons.

Loan policies

Circulation Policies & Procedures:

Your Reynolds student/faculty ID entitles you to check out material including print books, audio books, and DVDs from Reynolds Library (15 item limit). Community users may obtain a library card by bringing in their valid photo ID with proof of permanent address (5 item limit). Material checked out on your card is your responsibility.

Patrons may obtain material from any Reynolds Campus Library either in person or through intra-campus loan. Requests normally arrive within three business days. Material can be returned to any Reynolds Library.

Circulating Material:

Material that can be checked out of the libraries include:

  • Print Books: 28 day checkout with two renewals
  • Audio Books: 28 day checkout with two renewals
  • Popular DVDs: 1 week checkout with two renewals
  • Calculators: Some calculators are for overnight checkouts and other calculators are for 2 week checkouts.
  • Laptops: Checkout for 4 hours or semester, FAQs

Please note: Renewals are not possible when items are on hold for another patron.

Reference Material:

Reference books (encyclopedias, directories, etc.) and periodicals (magazines, journals, and newspapers) can be used within the library but cannot be checked out of the library.

Textbook/Course Reserve Material:

Some instructors request material (textbooks, student guides, articles, realia, etc.) to be placed on reserve at the circulation desk for students to use in the library. Most reserve material has a 2-hour loan period. Instructors will inform students of the titles and availability of items on reserve.

Checkout is limited to 2 items.

Reserve items are supplied by instructors and academic departments or are taken from the library’s circulating collection. The Reserve Collection does not contain textbooks for all Reynolds classes.

Copyright compliance is the responsibility of the faculty member. Be sure to check for any distribution restrictions that will make the item ineligible for reserve. Reynolds Library reserves the right to reject any materials that it deems violate Copyright Law.

Please note that reserve items are usually unique to each campus. Items on reserve at one campus may not be available at other campuses. To check the availability of items on Reserve, conduct a search on the Textbook/Course Reserves page.

Borrowing Materials from Other Libraries

If material is not available at Reynolds Library, current students, faculty, and staff can borrow material from other libraries through the following options:

Cooperative Borrowing Program

Reynolds Library has partnered with other academic libraries in VIVAs Cooperative Borrowing Program which allows current Reynolds students, faculty, and staff to borrow library materials directly from participating libraries. Borrowers will be required to show their Reynolds ID and must abide by all policies of the lending library, including loan periods, fines, and replacement charges. Borrowers may need to log into their myReynolds account to prove current enrollment or employment. Borrowers need to return material directly to the lending library.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Current students, faculty, and staff can use ILL to request materials from libraries nationwide by filling out the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Request Form. Patrons will be notified by email about the status of the request. Textbooks cannot be requested through Interlibrary Loan. Be advised that not all materials are available for loan. Items can take up to two weeks to arrive, so please plan ahead.

Overdue materials

Overdue materials or outstanding fees result in a block on the patron’s library record. Patrons cannot check out material, obtain transcripts or register for classes until the block is cleared. Library blocks will be cleared when the items are returned and/or when the fee is paid.

Lost or Damaged Material:

Items more than 30 days overdue are considered lost items and a billing letter will be sent. The charge for a lost or damaged item is:

  • $50 per book/audiobook or the replacement cost, whichever is greater
  • $25 per DVD or the replacement cost, whichever is greater
  • $25 per item in the Graphic Novel, Urban Fiction, Juvenile, Bestseller and ESL collections or the replacement cost, whichever is greater
  • Laptop replacement cost may exceed $1000
  • Equipment replacement costs assessed by type

Patrons may be issued a refund for lost items that they have paid for and are subsequently able to return. Material must be:

  • Undamaged
  • Returned within 6 months of the original due date of the material
  • Not yet replaced

Reynolds Library does not accept patron-purchased replacement copies of lost material in lieu of payment of the replacement fee.

The replacement fee for lost or damaged Interlibrary Loan material will be determined by the respective lending library.

Unpaid library obligations will prevent students from registering and obtaining grade transcripts. The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that all debts to the State be actively pursued. Therefore, any debts not paid will be sent to a collection agency at which time additional fees may accrue.

Mobile device loan & agreement

Semester laptop loan Policy

We have a limited number of laptops for semester loan.  Please check out this comprehensive FAQ for details.

Short Term Loan Policy
  • Mobile devices are available on a first come, first-served basis to current Reynolds students in good standing with the library.  A Reynolds ID or valid photo ID is required to check out any mobile device
  • Laptops may be borrowed for 4 hours or until 30 minutes before the library closes, whichever is earlier.  One renewal is allowed for mobile devices if there are no other requests. Mobile devices cannot be checked out overnight.
  • Mobile devices are the responsibility of the student during the loan period.
  • Mobile devices must be returned directly to a staff member to the same campus library where they were checked out. The device remains checked out until library staff verify that all components are present and functional.
  • Students must know their MyReynolds username and password to sign into the device. No software or apps can be loaded onto the device. Please save any files to the cloud or a flash drive. 
  • Printing is available from mobile devices through PaperCut
  • Only one laptop at a time may be checked out by a user.
  • The Library reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who abuses equipment, or is repeatedly late in returning materials or equipment.
Fine and Replacement Costs
  • The overdue fine for mobile devices is $1.00/hour or partial hour when the library is open. Once the fine has reached $15.00, the device will be considered lost and a billing letter will be sent.
  • The user may be billed for the full replacement costs for mobile devices/accessories lost, damaged or unreturned.  A hold will be placed on the user’s MyReynolds account, and the user will not be allowed to register for classes, borrow library materials, request transcripts, or participate in graduation until the issue is resolved. The replacement charge is non-refundable once the semester ends.

Student acceptable use of computers, laptops, and mobile devices is governed by the college’s policies in the Information Technology Student Acceptable Use Agreement, included in the College Catalog (Policies and Procedures section).

Quiet policy

Quiet study is expected and enforced at all campus libraries. Please abide by Reynolds’ learning environment principles by respecting one another’s privacy and keeping noise and conversation to a minimum. Cell phones should be set to silent mode before entering any campus library. Library staff may contact campus police if necessary to handle disruptive patrons.
